- [South American Primate Study](https://volunteerlatinamerica.com/volunteer-abroad/colombia/south-american-primate-study/): We are looking for volunteer research assistants to help with an ongoing project (Ecology and Behaviour of South American Primates) in two locations in Colombia (Magdalena Valley and Llanos). The Magdalena Valley project is located in a private cattle farm named San Juan del Carare. The farm is surrounded by several forest fragments that contain white faced capuchins; brown spider monkeys; owl monkeys and red howler monkeys. The Llanos project is located in Tomo Grande Reserve; Vichada and the gallery forest in the reserve contains red howler monkeys; owl monkeys and tufted capuchins; which are the focus of this project. Each species has at least one troop well habituated and most individuals in each group are identified. Field biologists assist with tagging and measuring nesting turtles. When turtles nest below the high-tide line; field biologists relocate eggs from nests at risk of inundation to a beach hatchery. Other responsibilities include monitoring nests in the hatchery; excavating hatched nests; and recording temperature data from incubating nests.

We rely heavily on volunteers to carry out our work. Many volunteers need support; especially upon arrival; in order to successfully adapt to life at the Project and make a meaningful contribution. Assistance with volunteer support is needed pre-service to help field questions and create accurate expectations of the experience; and post-service to keep ARP's community strong. In addition; the position requires that documents relating to all aspects of the organisation be kept up to date and organised. The applicant will take a lead role in coordinating the development of the new community centre; which will act as the base for all ARP operations. What we ask from you: Work is required from Mondays to Fridays; except for local holidays. Provide in-service support to volunteers and interns; and assist with pre- and post-service support. The applicant is expected to live in volunteer housing and provide a positive example to other volunteers. The coordinator must be friendly and easily accessible to volunteers during weekday afternoons. The coordinator also needs to become familiar with worksites and is encouraged to spend at least one morning each week involved in programming. If there is a lack of volunteers; the coordinator may be asked to fill in where needed in the field. Public buses are typically used to reach field sites; in some cases; travelling by private car or walking is required. Applicants must be able to walk 4km comfortably. If you have any special abilities/skills; we welcome you as capacity permits to teach a community class in our new community centre. This is a long-term position that requires a minimum 8 months commitment.
