Food & Water for Jaguars

Fundación Estación Biológica Bachaqueros

About the Program

We are dedicated to participatory ecological restoration throughout the national territory but with a special presence in the Caribbean Region. We are looking for volunteers to reside in our El Jaguar del Carrizal Biological Station Reserve located in a rural area near Gaira (next to Santa Marta). The Reserve is part of the Jaguar Corridor (territory inhabited in constant transition by these cats) and therefore our efforts seek to provide an increasingly suitable habitat for them. For this; reforestation; soil restoration and recovery of a water source are underway in our reserve. Our strongest project now is Viveros Hermanos whose objective is to create a network of community and individual nurseries that reproduce the native plant species of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta with special emphasis on those threatened locally and / or globally.

The activities in which our volunteers participate are:

  • Hikes to collect seeds and seedlings
  • Maintenance of the nursery (irrigation; weeding; transplantation; seed germination)
  • Monitoring of the source of water in recovery (measurement of water table; temperature and humidity relative)
  • Participation in food sovereignty objectives (planting; irrigation; harvesting and processing of organic food)
  • Participation in planting days inside and outside the Reserve
  • Support in the maintenance of nurseries of the communities in the network of Viveros Hermanos
  • Monitoring of fauna and avifauna
  • Construction and maintenance of infrastructure of the Reserve
  • Maintenance and signalling of trails in the Reserve

Each volunteer offers 3 hours a day; 5 days a week (two days off). In addition to working hours; all the people who inhabit the reserve must participate in the kitchen shifts and cleaning and maintenance of the infrastructure that is for our comfort and also help carry the purchased food from the entrance of the reserve to the house.

Volunteers who stay for 3 months or more are given the option to write their own research project and dedicate part of their working hours to their project. Volunteers who stay less than 3 months usually do not have their own project and support projects that are in progress.
