We are a non-profit organization that rescue; rehabilitate and release of wildlife native to Costa Rica. Animals that can’t be released due different reasons stay in the Sanctuary and we provide a better environment and care enclosures which seek to simulate their natural habitat. Some of the wildlife that we receive are wildcats; monkeys; parrots; macaws; opossums; mustelids; and other species of birds and mammals.
Today our Shelter has a total of eighteen enclosures for environment education purposes. An additional ten enclosures are used for quarantine purposes and two for rehabilitation before release. We also have enclosure for domestic animals (rabbits and guinea pigs) that we sell to support the centre and to educate visitors about the differences between wild and domestic animals.
The volunteer program gives people the opportunity to collaborate with the objectives of the Shelter and get involved in the conservation of wildlife. Some of the activities that volunteers can engage in are: environmental education; operations and maintenance of surroundings; guide visitors; prepare food for animals; environmental enrichment. Innovative ideas which can be implemented to improve the shelter are always welcome. Volunteers work 8 hours per day for 6 days a week (one day off per week). Please note volunteers will never be in direct contact with the animals.
If a volunteer or student is interested in developing a research project (internship) at the shelter; it can be done in coordination with our staff. Here is a list of proposed research topics: diet of wild animals in captivity; environmental enrichment; biodiversity inventories and population studies; veterinary medicine; environmental education; environmental interpretation.
