About the Program

Our English School is looking for volunteers who want to teach English in San Salvador; El Salvador. The school is dedicated to teaching English within a context that facilitates growth as human beings and contributes to the movement for social justice in El Salvador and the world. The minimum time commitment for volunteer teachers includes a 2-hour class that meets three evenings a week; a discussion group one evening a week; plus class preparation; teachers’ meetings and workshops throughout the session (10-15 hours per week total). We strive to meet the needs of our students and the communities we serve; therefore we are looking for mature; flexible; open-minded volunteers. At times volunteers may work alone; at other times; collaborative teaching may be necessary. Sessions are 9-10 weeks duration each and we have four in a year.

To apply; we require an application form; as well as one letter of recommendation (this can be from a former teacher; a colleague; a work supervisor).

Volunteer teachers receive half-off Spanish classes.

English teachers must be fluent in English. Teachers must display enthusiasm; leadership; commitment; and compassion. Community building. Passion and creativity.

There is a US$100 program fee; which will be used to assist in covering the costs of transportation for volunteer staff excursions; the political-cultural activities; and administrative costs. We recommend living with one of the families in our host family network. It costs US$90 per week; which includes both breakfast and dinner; plus it’s a great way to practice your Spanish. Most of the families are located fairly close to our office and offer a safe environment.
