Bio-construction: Water From Humidity

Bambuddha

About the Program

Our project; Arbol de Agua (Tree of Water); was designed to collect water from humidity. The intention for this water is to help with reforestation efforts and for the conservation of wildlife. We will be constructing an 11 m high ‘tree’ made of bamboo that will filter the humidity in the air into water; which will then be funneled to a reservoir below. This structure will be made in a natural reserve in Peten; Guatemala where reforestation efforts have already begun. We are looking for volunteers who have previous knowledge in construction; ideally having worked with bamboo before; and the ability to use tools effectively. They will be responsible for attaching the fabric to the bamboo posts; and raising the posts to begin assembling the structure. We offer 2 weeks of placement for 4 different time slots between November 16; 2020 – January 15; 2021. November 16 – November 30; December 1 – December 15; December 16 – December 30; January 4 – January 16. Volunteers will have 3 days off. The cost of each placement is US$350. You can stay longer if you are inclined; and the contribution to the project will be relative to the extension of your stay.

It is required that the volunteers bring their own camping equipment: tent; sleeping mat; and sleeping bag. If you do not have a tent; we can help to organize sharing between the volunteers. Dry toilets and showers will be available on site. During the days off; volunteers can leave the site – 20 mins to walk down the mountain and arrive to town where the bus terminal is located. From there; they can explore the area of Peten; visiting towns such as Santa Elena; Flores; San Miguel; El Remate; all of which are surrounding lake Peten Itza. There is also the possibility to go and see the Mayan ruins of Tikal; Yaxa; Nakun y Naranjo. We will have more information of the transport available and other recommendations while on site.
