Marine Turtle Conservation Program

Grupo Ecológico de la Costa Verde

About the Program

We are a Mexican non-profit; civil association dedicated to the protection of the natural environmental; with special interest in the protection of the marine turtle and community environmental education. We are a hard working; turtle first; conservation group; we are not in the ecotourism business although we do give interpretive talks to the public.

Our marine nursery is one of the few in Mexico that remains open throughout the year to protect the Olive Ridley; with very few Eastern Pacific Green’s; and Leatherback.

Volunteer duties:

  • Collect nests and relocate to several nurseries between the hours of 9pm to 6am; crews work in three shifts of three hours
  • Monitor and regulate nursery temperatures; care for hatching; release of hatchlings; and the cleaning of nest boxes
  • Keep the greenhouse nursery in good condition
  • Maintain computer records on nests collected; temperatures; and the cleaning of nests
  • Maintain and operate two all-terrain-vehicle
  • Conduct interpretive lectures and tours on our marine turtle program

Our volunteer program begins at the onset of the Olive Ridley nesting season; generally; from early May to mid November.
