About the Program

English teachers play a main role for our English Education Program. You will have the possibility to plan interactive lesson for kids and adults and help us evaluate the progress of each student. While volunteering with us you will gain a deeper understanding for the daily life in the communities around Oaxaca and help to open up more future opportunities for your English students. This is a perfect opportunity for someone who wants to improve their teaching skills; get a deeper understanding of educational processes; and enjoys working with kids in a creative way. You should be open to new cultural experiences and have a high level of flexibility. A strong sense motivation; creativity; and fluent English (written and oral) are essential. Teaching experience and a good level of Spanish are useful; but are not necessary. You will receive teacher training before you teach your first lesson. Join us today! We are currently recruiting teachers for our English program. We welcome teachers at all times of the year; if you are not available at the moment but further in the future; please get in touch. We also host internships and can complete any paperwork required by your college/university. At this time; En Vía is a very small organization and unfortunately we are not able to provide assistance with housing or living costs; but we can give you suggestions on affordable housing in or around the city.

Typical day

Volunteer English teachers commit to teaching two afternoons a week either in Tlacochahuaya or Teotitlán del Valle. Volunteer tasks are to plan dynamic and active lessons based on the class curriculum provided by the organization. We provide teaching materials; printer/copier; training and any support needed during the volunteer’s stay. No teaching experience is necessary. In both locations we teach in the Municipio buildings which are an indoor/outdoor space. There are whiteboards; pens; tables; chairs and some teaching materials in the communities but any additional materials have to be carried to and from the office. Volunteers work with students in groups of 2-10. The students are mostly youth that range in age from 6-16; but there is a small group of adult learners as well. There are a range of different abilities; but most students are beginners. To get to both communities; we travel as a group on public transportation which generally takes about an hour in each direction. This is the only cost associated with volunteering; the cost is between 25-30 pesos round-trip. We are leaving normally at 2.30pm from our office and are back at 7pm.
