Empowering Children Through Surfing Peru
Description
Our team is looking for incredible individuals who can take our organisation to the next level and get even more kids into the water. We are looking for motivated, hands-on volunteers that are keen to get stuck into anything and are driven to get to know our local community and culture. There are a variety of roles to be taken up within our team, and as we are a small organisation you could be instrumental in shaping the future of Surf Cerrito! Of course volunteers can get involved with the surf lessons, whether that is helping the younger kids get used to being in the water, leading the pre surf stretch or coaching the more advanced surfers out the back, there are always ways to get involved. When you are not in the surf classes, you could be helping us with the administration and expansion of our organisation. Studies have shown the positive impacts of physical activity on mental wellbeing and Surfing is now regarded as a form of therapy by doctors and psychiatrists around the world. That is why it is so important to give kids from low income backgrounds the opportunity to access the ocean and reap all of its amazing benefits. Most of the kids of Cerrito de la Virgen, despite being so close, do not have access to the water, due to financial difficulties, inability to swim, family issues and a general mentality that the sea is not their space to enjoy. Through engaging lessons by two qualified surf instructors we are harnessing the power of the water as a tool for mental and physical development. As well as surf lessons, we also provide a safe space to talk about our emotional wellbeing, with the beginning of the session being dedicated to healthy discussion together. We also need help with marketing, fundraising, development, community outreach, construction, as well as class planning and preparation. Being able to surf isn't necessary and all we ask is that you are passionate and committed to youth development and having fun in the water. We want positive role models who love kids! If you think you could be the next member of team Surf Cerrito and spread our love for the water, surf and nature with the loveliest kids in the incredible Peruvian coast, please join us! Please apply through filling out our online form or alternatively email us at surfcerrito@gmail.com. We can't wait to hear from you!
